Women’s International Film and Television Showcase
Endorsed by the City of West Hollywood Marketing and Visitors Bureau
Debuts December 4–7, 2008
The Women’s International Film and Television Showcase (The WIFTS), a new showcase recognizing the talents of women in film and television, will take place for four days, December 4 – 7, 2008, at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, as was announced by Bradley Burlingame, President & CEO the West Hollywood Marketing and Visitors Bureau, which together with The City of West Hollywood, has endorsed the event.
Revealed Burlingame, "Film and television are vitally important industries in West Hollywood and for some time we've been working to find an event like The WIFTS to bring to our community. The event will be unique in that it is being held at the Pacific Design Center and all the amenities – screenings, restaurants, parking – are in one location, unlike other such events.”
The WITFS vision statement notes that the event “returns to the basics of early international film festivals that focused on independent filmmakers who did not have a forum to promote their work.”

Ona Dawes, entrepreneur, former filmmaker and chairperson for The WIFTS Advisory Committee, explained, “Some wonderful women filmmakers have entertained us and made our lives more interesting but have gone unnoticed. Like beautiful flowers that adorn our dinner parties, we love to look at them and admire them for a minute but then they are forgotten. This is why The WIFTS will honor those women who have done amazing work and should be recognized.”
A new concept award,
The Visionary Award, will be presented to “a woman whose talent has exhibited a new approach to filmmaking, acting, or the entertainment business world.” The award is being designed by renowned French glassblower, Jean Claude Novaro, whose work is displayed in museums and galleries in New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Phoenix, Seattle, San Diego, and Las Vegas.
“The person receiving the Visionary Award will be one who has developed new techniques, new concepts and new ideas in an innovative approach to filmmaking, whether technical achievement, the business environment or communications,” said Co-Founders Craig Prater, formerly creative director of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Bangkok International Film Festival, and Elspeth Tavares, publisher and editor in chief of the film industry trade paper, The Business of Film. They added, “Women are not recognized enough in our industry or given the opportunities that their male counterparts receive. In addition to the Visionary Award, honorary awards will be presented to women who have a great body of work behind them but who have thus far not been recognized. The WIFTS will help to build a future for our honorees every year. We believe that now is a good time to provide a showcase of the best of what women filmmakers are achieving worldwide. The event is timed to coincide with the glamour of the Academy Awards season to provide added exposure for the films, the event and the sponsors.”
Awards, some honorary, include those for best film, best director, best cinematography, best screenplay, as well as career and lifetime achievement. Recipients will be selected by a jury comprised of established film executives and celebrities, and awards will be given out at the Closing Night Ceremony.
The Showcase will support three charities: the Malibu Adult and Young Adult Activity Center for the Disabled; Bykids, which pairs established filmmakers as mentors for young people to help them make short films about their lives; and D.A.W.G.S., an animal care sanctuary.
The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase will focus on the work of women producers, directors and cinematographers from around the world. It will open with a world premiere on December 4th and close with an awards ceremony and premiere on Sunday, December 7th. A total of 16 films will have their world premieres during
The WIFTS at the Pacific Design Center ’s Silver Screen Theater, with four films being screened each day.
Elizabeth Grant Sponosrs The WIFTS Entrepreneurial Award
Elizabeth Grant, founder and head of the Toronto-based skincare products company, Elizabeth Grant International, will sponsor the Entrepreneurial Award at the inaugural event of The WIFTS.
The Elizabeth Grant Entrepreneurial Award is one of a number to be presented at The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase that will be selected by a jury comprised of established film executives and celebrities to be presented on the final evening of the event.
Other awards in the film category will include those for best film, best director, best cinematography, pre-eminent breakout role (sponsored by Ona Dawes), as well as career and lifetime achievement awards.
The mission of The WIFTS is also to recognize women from other industries, from the business world and from public life. The Visionary Award, the Dove Award and the Entrepreneurial Award were all created to acknowledge and celebrate talented women in these sectors of society.
Elizabeth Grant said: “When I started my business sixty years ago women entrepreneurs were regarded as an oddity. Women were meant to stay at home, be perfect wives and mothers, and in the work force were seldom promoted to managerial level.
“Today, women are recognized as being a powerful force in business. In the U.S. alone, women own nearly 40 percent of all businesses. We are dynamic, innovative and unstoppable. This is why I am proud to have the Entrepreneurial Award for women named after me.”
Craig Prater elaborated, “Elizabeth exemplifies the virtues of a successful woman, which is the ethos of The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase. With her success, she has reached out, supported and mentored other women. That is the mission at the heart of our film showcase so we are extremely pleased with our association with Elizabeth and her company.”
Elspeth Tavares, co-founder, added, "Women in all walks of our society are not celebrated enough for the contributions they make in their chosen vocations. Filmed entertainment is the 21st century’s visual communicator. At The WIFTS event, women from all walks of life will come together to celebrate the strength and participation of women across the spectrum of our society.”
Announcing Elizabeth Grant’s ongoing support, the company expressed, “As well as our sponsorship, The WIFTS Foundation (2009) will receive a percentage of the proceeds of the French Lavender essence Aromatherapy Rebalancing Bath Oil from the range of its European Spa Massage and Oils “on a long term basis” with The WIFTS logo on the outside packaging.”
