On Saturday, October 18, 2008, a play celebrated its world premiere in a tiny 96-seat theatre in North Hollywood … but attracted the kind of celebrity attention that would normally be reserved for a major studio event.
The site was the El Portal Forum Theatre on Lankershim Boulevard, and the red carpet was ablaze with stars arriving to support James Denton and wife Erin J. O’Brien, who star in the world premiere of HOW CISSY GREW. The drama is written by Susan Johnston, directed by Casey Stangl, and also stars Liz Vital and Stewart W. Calhoun.
Denton is best known for playing plumber Mike Delfino on TV’s Desperate Housewives, and it’s clear from Saturday night’s turnout that the show has a tight-knit ensemble. Showing up to enjoy the evening were Housewives cast members Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Brenda Strong, Doug Savant, Neal McDonough, William Fichtner and Shawn Pyfrom, as well as series creator Marc Cherry. Also celebrating the evening were celebs Laura Leighton, Greg Grunberg, and Bob Guiney.
The opening night performance and post-show party, which took place in the beautiful lobby of the El Portal Theatre, was sponsored by Venice, L.A.’s arts & entertainment magazine, and Glowelle, the new beauty drink. Guests enjoyed spirits courtesy of Absolut Pear, Asahi Beer, Evian, Cobblestone Vineyards, and John & Pete’s.
HOW CISSY GREW will continue its strictly-limited engagement at the El Portal Forum Theatre (5269 Lankershim Blvd.) through November 23rd. HOW CISSY GREW is a non-linear drama exploring defining moments in one family’s life as they struggle to stay together in the face of guilt, blame and addiction. With moments from a life presented without respect to a traditional timeline, HOW CISSY GREW engages audiences in a mystery, encouraging an objective viewing of the various characters, and ultimately brings new clarity to how people are controlled by their past.
